It's A Boy as part of Mission Possible UK Tour
2009 Nationwide
State of Emergency's Mission National Showcase Tour hit the road with zeal once again, presenting a sparkling show that exposes the male psyche, combining street, hip-hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance.
Leading black British choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles created a brand new piece of dance theatre putting male relationships under the microscope, studying classic role models and exploring the male perspective. From the emotional bond between father and son to the solidarity and relaxed approach to friendship, five spectacular male dancers present snapshots of young men in the 21st Century.
It's A Boy was created in response to the many reports we hear today of gun and knife crimes. While the piece does not involve guns or knives, it looks at how a simple moment/accident can escalate into a violent reaction. Five men just hanging around, or are they locked up? It’s A Boy is an energetic piece of dance theatre created on five contemporary dancers. Working creatively with contemporary dance and then adding the flavour of House Dance, choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles delivers a punchy, non-narrative, symbolic piece taking as inspiration what can happen when two men simply bump into each other by accident.
